FIRST CALLIOPE NONFICTION WEB CONTEST Accepting Entries:
February 15 – June 15, 2008 Accepting Critiques until July 4,
2008
Word Count
Up to 2,500 words.
Entry Forms/Fees
No fee. No entry forms. Entries will
be posted on the CalliopeWriters.org web site from the week of
receipt until August 15, 2008, at the latest.
How to Submit/Format
Nonfiction entries may be submitted
electronically by MS Word attachment or as text in the body of
the email message. Hardcopy submissions will be accepted using
standard manuscript format: 1” margins all around.
Entries will be posted to a Nonfiction Contest area of the web site,
however, authors’ names will be withheld.
Entries will be disqualified if they do not relate to the
theme of the contest or if, in the eyes of the General Editor,
they do not pass the test of good taste—i.e., no graphic sex,
gratuitous profanity, etc.
Work must be original—no reprints.
Critiques should be submitted in electronic or
hardcopy format as described above. Critiques must state the
title of the applicable nonfiction entry. Each critique will be
posted at the end of the nonfiction entry on the web site, with
the critic’s name withheld.
The Fine Print
Note: critiques will be judged on the basis of their
usefulness to the author of the piece being critiqued. The
editors reserve the right to refuse publication (and thereby
entry in the contest) to any critique that serves only to
humiliate the author while offering no positive or constructive
criticism. Think of the type of critique a GOOD writing
instructor might provide. Disqualified critics will be notified
and encouraged to revise and resubmit.
Winners
must retain sufficient rights for publication in Calliope, or their entries will be disqualified.
Prizes
The number of prizes will be determined based on the number of
entries. At least one nonfiction and one critique prize will be
awarded. Winners will receive gift subscriptions to
Calliope,
publication in the Summer or Fall 2008 issue, and certificates
suitable for framing.
All entries will be considered
for future publication.
Notification
Winners will be notified by mail or e-mail and announced on this
web site. We use one-time rights only.
About The Judging
Winners will be selected by The General Editor, with comments,
opinions and concurrence solicited from other
Calliope
editors, and/or others the General Editor deems appropriate.
The decision of the judge will be final; every attempt will be
made to render a fair and unbiased decision.
